Europe is the place where well-being and prosperity meet responsibility and solidarity, where freedom meets security and the respect for the rule of law. It is where each European has the opportunity to prosper and thrive and where the search for personal fulfilment is not only protected, but also enabled by a system that upholds the highest human rights standards of non-discrimination and tolerance. Greek philosophy, Roman law, and Christian traditions are the foundations on which we base our civilisation and our cultural heritage. This is the origin of our common identity, where even regional specificities find their place, and in which the languages and cultures of our Member States' traditional minorities are valued and protected.
